Full accountability: lessons learned
A number of years ago, I was convicted of a DUI following a lapse in judgment. I accepted full responsibility, fulfilled every requirement of the court, and have had no further incidents. It remains a reminder of the importance of personal accountability, and I've carried that lesson forward in my personal and professional life. My commitment to Montana means confronting challenges directly and learning from every experience.
As part of my commitment to openness, I address a long-resolved matter from many years ago: While serving on a board, a disagreement over finances led to a false accusation of sexual harassment against me. The person involved has since stated clearly that the allegation was not accurate and was made under difficult personal circumstances unrelated to my actions. The claim was never substantiated, and I was fully exonerated in the context it arose. I value honesty and accountability, which is why I share this proactively—my focus remains on positive, respectful collaboration in my current endeavors.
When I was 6 years old, I stole a candy bar from the corner store. The guilt hit me hard almost immediately. Within minutes I walked back, handed it to the owner, and said I was sorry. He was kind about it—and I’ve never forgotten the lesson.
